The Talk-Rich Teaching Toolkit is built around five research-informed principles. It offers practical guidance and teaching activities to help schools make small, purposeful changes to classroom practice.
The Toolkit encourages teachers to create more opportunities for multilingual learners to talk, think and learn together, while celebrating the languages, knowledge and experiences they bring to school.

How was the Toolkit developed?
The Talk-Rich Teaching Toolkit was created by Professor Naomi Flynn at the University of Reading in collaboration with Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS).
It draws on research into effective teaching for multilingual learners, alongside the expertise of teachers and school leaders. Developed through a British Academy Innovation Fellowship, the Toolkit was piloted in nine Hampshire primary schools, where practitioners explored how small changes to classroom talk and teaching could support multiligual learners’ confidence, participation and learning.
Their experiences and feedback have helped shape the practical guidance and resources now available to schools more widely.
